Why local matters

A Tenterden hedge is not a generic hedge.

Tenterden sits on a ridge of sandier ground rising above the heavy Wealden clay that surrounds it, part of the same Tunbridge Wells Sand and Wadhurst Clay sequence that underlies the whole High Weald. That ridge is exactly why the town is where it is, better drainage and building ground than the clay lowlands either side. Off the ridge, on the orchard and field-boundary land around St Michaels and out towards Rolvenden and Sandhurst, the clay holds water hard through a wet winter and bakes solid in a dry summer, a very different planting problem to sandy or chalky ground.

I work to that reality, not against it. Hawthorn, blackthorn and field maple on the clay boundaries, exactly what has held the Weald's fields apart for centuries. Beech, yew and privet on the better-drained High Street plots. Box avoided on anything low-lying and wet. And a tape measure on any stem approaching the 75mm conservation-area threshold before I touch it.

Inside a conservation area?

I handle the paperwork.

Tenterden's conservation area (Ashford ref CA-43, designated 10 October 1996) covers the historic High Street and much of the town's Georgian and Victorian core. Several outlying villages I cover, Rolvenden and Biddenden among them, have their own designated conservation areas too. Any tree or hedge with a stem over 75mm at chest height needs six weeks' written notice to Ashford Borough Council before pruning. I file the section-211 notice on your behalf, included in every quote.

Common questions

Hedge cutting in Tenterden: your questions answered.

When can you legally cut a hedge in Tenterden?

It is an offence under section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to intentionally damage or destroy an active wild bird's nest. The main nesting season runs 1 March to 31 August, extending into September for late broods. Cutting outside that window is the legal default. Tenterden's mixed hedgerows, hawthorn, blackthorn, holly and field maple, are exactly the structure farmland and garden birds nest in across the Weald, so a quick check before any spring or summer cut is standard practice here.

Do I need permission to cut a hedge in the Tenterden conservation area?

Routine cutting of hedging species is exempt. But if any single stem in the hedge or boundary line is over 75mm diameter at 1.5m from the ground, section 211 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 requires six weeks' written notice to Ashford Borough Council before any pruning. Tenterden's conservation area covers the historic High Street core and much of the surrounding townscape. Several of the nearby Weald villages I cover, including Rolvenden and Biddenden, have their own designated conservation areas too. Unauthorised works to a protected tree can carry a significant fine. I check the address and file the s.211 notice on your behalf where needed, included in every quote.

What hedge species actually work on Tenterden's clay soil?

The town sits on a ridge of sandier ground rising above the heavy Wealden clay that surrounds it, so drainage varies sharply within a few hundred metres. On the clay lowlands: hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple and hornbeam are the reliable native workhorses, all used for centuries in Weald field boundaries. On garden plots with better drainage: beech, yew, privet, laurel and Leylandii all perform well. What struggles on the wetter clay: box (root rot in a wet winter) and anything planted without any soil preparation on a waterlogged site.

How much does hedge cutting cost in Tenterden?

Most routine hedge cuts in Tenterden fall between £120 and £400 depending on length, height, species and access. Annual trims on formal garden hedges typically sit at the lower end; heavier reductions on overgrown Leylandii or laurel screens on the larger Weald village plots range from £300 to £900. I quote a fixed price up front after seeing photos and the postcode.

What is the High Hedges route if my neighbour's hedge is blocking light?

Under Part 8 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003, if an evergreen or semi-evergreen hedge over 2m is causing a reasonable loss of light or amenity and you have tried to resolve it with the neighbour first, you can lodge a formal complaint with Ashford Borough Council. The council charges a fee for the complaint, so check its current charge before you apply. The larger detached and semi-detached plots around Tenterden and its outlying villages throw up genuine High Hedges cases from time to time, and a mature 6m Leylandii screen planted decades ago on a generous Weald garden is not unusual.
